All our dogs, from the youngest to the oldest, are on a raw diet, better known in Italy as Barf diet. Barf stays for "Biologically Appropriate Raw Food" or simply "Bones and Raw Food". The diet was invented in the 90's by the Australian veterinarian Dr. Ian Billinghurst. More recently, especially in North America and Australia, the Barf diet has been replaced by Raw Feeding, a more generic term that simply refers to a natural diet. Raw feeding has been promoted by another Australian veterinarian, Dr. Tom Lonsdale. Although the two diets (Barf and Raw) differ regarding the use of vegetables and supplemets, the baseline concept is basically the same: to feed the dog with natural and unprocessed food, which would be what wolves and other canids eat in nature (the so-called prey model). In practice, these diets are made of meat, bones and offal. Everything is strictly RAW.
Our dogs eat different kinds of meat and bone (chicken, turkey, beef and rabbit), whole fish (sardines), and offal (usually heart and liver). Every now and then, we also give vegetables, eggs and yogurt. The only supplement we use is fish oil (not cod liver oil!).
